TROPICAL MOTEL OF THE STARS

Mid-century architecture, a tropical atmosphere and an ode to the stars of rock and roll come together in the historic San Francisco motel where Neil Young lived when he recorded the album Déjà Vu.

For years this motel was the favorite place of rock’n’roll stars like David Bowie or Kurt Cobain. In fact, the legend says that Neil Young lived here when he recorded the album Déjà Vu with Crosby, Stills and Nash. Considered today a cultural icon of mid-century architecture, this accommodation in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco was originally called Caravan Lodge and was built in 1956 with numerous references to tropical style. Between the 70s and 80s it deteriorated noticeably until the businessman Chip Conley bought it convinced that the ample parking lot would be perfect for groups on tour (since they needed to park their bus during the night).

Today the Phoenix hotel is operated by Bunkhouse – the company of Liz Lambert – that has preserved its identity and character by highlighting its history in public and private spaces. The 44 rooms have a simple and colorful design inspired by the universe of music. Its large windows, which face the courtyard, fill the textiles with bright colors, headboards and desks made to measure, the luminous installations, the works of art and the vintage concert posters that populate them.

Inspired by the old recording studios, in the lobby there is a shop with products inspired by the punk and grunge spirit of the 80s and 90s. In the Chambers restaurant, which has a bar and a lounge, dark wood predominates. the vinyl shelves. A retro atmosphere in which Californian food is served with Japanese touches. In the center of the property, the pool is surrounded by butterfly chairs and cabins with white and red stripes, as well as plants that give the feeling of being in an urban oasis. It also highlights the work Tumbling Waves – My Fifteen Minutes by the artist Francis Forlenza.

Nearby are some of the most important music venues in San Francisco – such as the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, the Great American Music Hall and The Warfield. In addition, the Phoenix organizes cultural events and outdoor yoga classes, among other activities.
